With the new year quickly approaching, everyone begins to think of their New Year’s resolutions.  Some will give up sugary foods or try to stop a bad habit while others will commit to a new exercise program or weight loss goal.  Whatever the resolution happens to be, it is usually made in hopes of becoming a better you.  Why not make a resolution for healthier habits that extend to the workplace as well as at home?

Walking

To start off the new year with a ‘healthier you’ focus, there are several things you can incorporate into your workday to achieve this goal.  Whether it be packing healthy snacks to keep at your workstation for when that sugar craving hits or taking a fresh air break a couple of times a day to refocus and recharge your mind.  One of the most effective ways to boost productivity and re-energize is to get up and move even if for only a few minutes at a time.

Staying in one position for extended periods of time has been shown to be a risk factor for serious illnesses that may have long lasting side effects.  By making small changes, such as changing positions, taking a quick walking break at least once an hour throughout the day and utilizing lunch hours for a quick walk around the block, can not only cut down on these risks but improve your mood and productivity.

What can we do in the workplace to get employees up and moving throughout the day without disrupting the workflow?

  • Vary where you complete your work tasks throughout the floor plan so you can change positions frequently
  • Walk over to someone’s desk vs sending an email to your colleagues
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Set a reminder to stand up every hour for a few minutes or more
  • Encourage employees to eat lunch away from their desks
  • If company policies and budgets allow, utilize a HON Coordinate height adjustable base with any of our worksurfaces or a desktop riser so you can easily sit or stand throughout the day
  • Park your car further away from the door or walk/bike to and from work if you are local
  • Have a quick stand-up meeting in a common area vs a sit down in a conference room
  • Stroll throughout the office space while taking phone calls

Whatever you decide to do, it’s easy to make a commitment to becoming a healthier you in 2018. Our bodies were not designed to sit still for hours at a time and these simple steps can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing.  Make a resolution this new year to get up and move by implementing small changes throughout your workday.  You are worth it!

I started at The HON Company in June and have enjoyed working here the past few months. Who knew there was so much to learn about office furniture? As a new member of our Sales team, I had the opportunity to participate in an internal contest where I won my very own Desktop Riser – a new tool from HON that allows you to easily transform your standard seated-height desk into a standing desk.

Riser

Since I added this new workplace tool to my workstation, it has changed the way I work. In addition to the added flexibility and ergonomic benefits I have already experienced with this simple sit-to-stand solution, I have compiled a list of fun facts that I have learned and shared with my co-workers about the Desktop Riser’s functionality.

How wide is the Desktop Riser?

The top worksurface is 35’’. Don’t have a tape measure on hand? To put it simply, it fits 2 monitors comfortably.

Where do you take notes?

I love the feeling of checking something off a list, so it was important for me to still have space to write when I set the Desktop Riser on my worksurface. There is plenty of room on the top surface of my Desktop Riser to take notes, but it is still possible to use my existing workstation area as well. No matter your preference, there’s plenty of room to fit the way you work.

Is it easy to lift up and down?

Yes! I am confident that anyone would be able to operate this easy-to-lift and lower handle. Multiple coworkers in the office have stopped by to try it out and they are always pleasantly surprised by how easily it adjusts.

The moral of the story? The Desktop Riser is a great way to create the sit-to-stand workstation you desire, and then some! It’s a lightweight and easily installed solution that can be adjusted throughout your day to fit whatever height you need, without interrupting how you work.

It takes more than a desk and chair to be productive. Today’s workspaces are designed around multitasking and maximizing every inch of space. This means surrounding yourself with workplace tools that help you do more with less. Storage solutions that help you pile, stake and organize. Technological tools that put everything within arm’s reach, and cord management that keeps it all neatly tucked away. Ample lighting whether working day or night. Options for turning a fixed desk into a sit-to-stand workstation that offers a healthier way to work.

Monitor Arms
Monitor arms help bring the office to the 21st century and free up the shrinking desk space. Being able to raise the monitor off of a worksurface can help reduce eye strain for employees, and create space division from their neighbors in low panel/open plan layouts. View the Monitor Arms cut sheet for more information.

Power Modules
Bring power right to your worksurface with this clamp mount module and avoid crawling under the desk and stretching behind storage pieces to stay connected or charge electronics. View the Power and Cable Management cut sheet for more information.

Articulating Desk Lamp w/ Occupancy Sensor
Because the proper amount of illumination depends both on your vision and on the tasks being performed, overhead lighting may not always be appropriate as a single lighting source and we know natural lighting can be hard to come by. Consider adding this sleek task lamp to individualize lighting and support many different types of work. And don’t worry about leaving it on overnight! The occupancy sensor will turn it off when you have walked away from your desk. View the cut sheet for more information.

What are some of your favorite tools in the office?

Health and wellness in the workplace is becoming more and more important. You may not have access to a height-adjustable or sit-to-stand desk, but you can still promote your own wellness by engaging in active sitting.

But, what is active sitting? Active sitting happens in any chair that allows the person to move – movement is the key, and it’s what promotes wellness. Office chairs aren’t new, but according to the article The Quest for the Perfect Office Chair, incorporating the science of ergonomics into chair design really didn’t start until the 1970s.  Since then, ergonomic findings have continued to make it easier to move while you sit.

Features like tilt tension or weight-activated controls make reclining easier and more comfortable. Having the ability to recline allows users to change positions, creating movement in the spine. Any movement in your back helps to nourish the vertebral discs. The idea of active sitting is to foster this movement so you aren’t sitting still for long periods of time.

Another way to get a truly active sitting experience is to try a new seating option like Perch from basyx by HON. Perch provides a simple, new way to encourage movement while you work. Supporting both seated and standing-height positions, you can easily adjust the height of your Perch stool to meet your needs with a one-touch pneumatic adjustment. The pivoting base tilts forward to bring you closer to your work while promoting an open hip angle. The seat features a waterfall edge to improve circulation in your lower body and it also offers a 360-degree rotation with a return to center.  Perch is lightweight and easy to move with the flared handle design. And, Perch is available in five color options: Black, Charcoal, Red, Blue, and Green.

So, check out the new basyx by HON Perch to take your active seating to the next level or try any of the great task chair solutions HON has to offer that help promote movement for a healthier workday.

The concept of active sitting is just one of many ways to take a healthier approach to how you work. While active sitting helps reduce the effects of sedentary behaviors, it is important to remember that it’s not a replacement for dynamic, full-body activity.

How does your office furniture or layout encourage movement?

Workplace Wellness.jpg

Being healthy in the workplace can be challenging, especially when you feel like you don’t have the time. But it’s easy to take small steps to becoming more active in the office and motivate not only yourself, but your coworkers as well – creating a more positive work environment.

Do it Together

Teaming up with the people around you can be a great way to stay motivated. Schedule a walking meeting and chat with a team member while you take a lap around the building. Request that healthy substitutes be added to your vending machines. Join a fitness class with your coworkers or inquire about any gym membership perks or fitness classes offered through your company. For example, The HON Company is now offering a free Dance Fitness class for members in the evening and uses space in one of the manufacturing facilities to host the class.

Skip the Snacks

Pink sprinkles, smooth frosting, fluffy filling, sugary dough. The aroma of a freshly baked donut seems to have drifted past your desk. It’s not unusual for HON members to celebrate a birthday or a team success with yummy treats around the office.  It is okay to give in once in a while, but in moderation. It’s always a good idea to keep healthy snacks, such as granola bars, fruit or nuts, close at hand in your overhead storage or HON pedestal for when you’re feeling tempted. When you eat these nutrient-packed foods instead, you’ll stay full longer and find it easier to turn down the sweets.

Come Prepared

We are all allowed to treat ourselves to the occasional lunch out with coworkers, but waking up 10 minutes early to put together a healthy lunch and/or eat a healthy breakfast in the morning is another great way to help you avoid snacking throughout the day. To keep yourself healthy and focused during work hours, it’s also important to stay hydrated. According to the Mayo Clinic, the recommended amount of water intake is about 3 liters (13 cups) for men and 2.2 liters (9 cups) for women per day. Bring your favorite water bottle or mug and keep it at your workstation to remind you to keep drinking throughout the day. Before you know it, you won’t even realize you’re grabbing for it!

Mix Up Your Office Furniture

The right office furniture can also create a healthier work environment. From a variety of seating solutions and standing-height desks to collaborative lounge furniture, HON has products that encourage workers to get up and move around the office as they transition between different work spaces. The way your space is designed matters, too. The right layout can motivate us to be more active, even if we just make the conscious choice to walk over and talk to someone instead of sending an email.

Boosting employee morale

With the influx of Millennials coming into the workforce, companies are having to look at more creative ways to attract and retain new candidates. A quick search for articles on Millennials in the workplace will return thousands of hits on everything from generational gaps, motivational tips, how to work with Millennials, and ways to keep new talent. Below are 5 tips that will not only boost attention from Millennial candidates, but also help improve morale for your existing workforce:

  1. Recognition and Responsibility

Recognizing those who contribute to the overall benefit of the company provides the feeling of accomplishment that almost every employee desires. Whether it’s a process change, customer feedback, a new account, or personal achievement, giving recognition for a job well done is one of the easiest changes management can make to increase energy levels in the office.

Not only is the new workforce motivated by recognition, but also by responsibility. Across generations, employees want to feel like they are contributing to something greater and want to see that they have a real impact on change. For employees who prove themselves, adding additional responsibilities can not only have a positive impact on their performance, but also inspire them to contribute new innovative ideas.

  1. Fun Fridays

There are many different ideas for a fun Friday in the office, but the main point is to give employees something to look forward to throughout the work week. Companies across the country have developed different versions of Friday afternoon fun ranging from casual days, cooking classes, employee outings, or games. The most important thing to consider when planning these events is to make it consistent, ask for employee recommendations, and make it something everyone can participate in.

  1. Coffee, Juice, & Water

These three items are quite possibly what motivate me the most. I look forward to having a good cup of coffee in the morning followed by fresh juice and water throughout the day. People are becoming more and more health conscious, so many new workers are not impressed with the junk food and soda pop offered in vending machines. What better way to show you care about your employees’ wellbeing than to offer healthy options as a perk to working with your company? Yes, even coffee has some health benefits.

  1. Bring Home to the Office

This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to install “napping” pods, but consider the overall environment in your office. Is there enough natural light? Do employees have the option to bring their pets to work? Have you incorporated comfortable, inviting touch down spaces into your design? Even a little color throughout the office, whether through pictures, rugs, wall coverings, or panels could help bring new-found energy to the workplace.

  1. Give Back and Celebrate Local Businesses

My last tip is a little outside the box, but one of my favorites. New and veteran employees can all appreciate wanting to support local businesses, especially if your company is also a local business. Why not bring those businesses to your office? Once a month or quarter have a day which showcases a local business or multiple businesses by setting up a “shop” in your conference room. During the summer months, offer a farmer’s market in the parking lot where employees can shop during their lunch break. HON recently participated in a business day for local middle school students in Muscatine to come and learn about manufacturing, providing an opportunity to tour our buildings and learn about an industry they might not otherwise have exposure to. This is just one of the many ways HON likes to give back to and take pride in its community.

What are some of the perks that you especially enjoy at your office?
