If you’re anything like me, I love finding new ways to design my spaces – at home and in the office! With these 8 simple tips, you can re-decorate your workspace just in time for the holidays.

1. Add a Pop of Color

With HON’s latest fabric refresh, there are hundreds of options from which to choose that can bring life into your office this winter (my personal favorite is the Polka – Very Berry)! HON has created inspirational color palettes to make it easy to envision the right color scheme for your space. Have fun with it! Be BOLD and add patterns, or select colors that fit the season. There is no better way to make a statement to your customers, catch the attention of your guests or increase employee morale around the office than by adding a pop of color!

2. Add Whiteboards to Foster Creativity & Collaboration

Generally, we associate whiteboards with education settings, but they are also used in office spaces to foster creativity and collaboration. For example, we use whiteboards a lot in my department to give our sales team a place to brainstorm ideas, write daily goals, or even inspire each other with inspirational quotes of the week! In my experience, whiteboards can help keep people focused, allow them to collaborate with one another, and also boost productivity and creativity. To make it really easy to add to your space, HON offers both wall-mounted whiteboards and mobile whiteboards. You can even get creative and use glass stacker panels as a writing surface!

3. Create Alternative Places to Sit

Creating additional seating could be as simple as placing a cushion on your credenza or pedestal. This allows you to have short impromptu meetings right at your work space.  It’s an inexpensive way to not only create another option for seating, but also allows you to decorate your space with more fun fabrics!

4. Go Modular!

With HON’s full offering, there are so many options to choose from. Why not mix things up? HON’s soft seating line, Flock, allows you to connect multiple lounge seats together and reconfigure them in multiple designs. Plus, you can add Flock minis that can double as additional seating or workspaces when paired with the new laminate toppers! Another great product line for going modular is Voi desking with Accelerate workstations. Not only can you add a modern look with the open o-legs, but you can also create 120° workstation pods. How cool is the layout below!?

A couple months ago I read an article about the impact March Madness has on a company’s workforce. It is estimated that, during the month of March, employers in America lose up to $4B in productivity as a result of employees watching live games and tracking their playoff brackets.

But the truth is, distractions like these exist every day, and not just because of March Madness. As office furniture continues to trend towards more light-scale and open plan furniture, it’s important that we don’t forget the importance of heads-down, focused work. The HON Company provides many solutions that decrease the risk of disruptions, especially within an open plan office. Here are a few examples of our favorites:

Voi® Privacy Screens
Voi privacy screens provide a division of workspace between users, while also offering an opportunity to add a pop of color.

Panel Systems with Frameless Glass
Adding frameless glass on top of panels allows light to shine through while breaking up the visibility between users. You can tailor this premium look to your own preference by choosing between clear or frosted glass.

Shared Overhead Storage between Users
In addition to distractions being a bother for employees in an open floorplan, these layouts typically have less storage. Using shared overheads between users is a great way to address both of these concerns.

With Spring Forward behind us and the first official day of spring right around the corner, an office spring cleaning may be in order! Here are a few tips to help you on your journey:

Declutter!
Can you see your desktop, or is it obscured by the inordinate amounts of sticky notes, papers, and office supplies? If you no longer recall whether your desk is Mocha or Mahogany, it may be time to toss some trash. Anything that’s no longer useful, toss it out. Here, sticky notes are the biggest offender. Try to keep them to a minimum so that it doesn’t look like you’re testing canary yellow as your new office paint.

Scrub-a-Dub-Dub
The good news: If we were ever snowed in at HON, we could survive on my cache of desk snacks. The bad news: my desk sees a plethora of snacks, drinks, and meals on any given day. If you’re like me, this means you need the soap and bubbles more often! Fortunately, HON is well-equipped with cleaning instructions for your laminate desk or your workstation. Make sure to give your workstation a thorough cleaning every week (or more!) to disinfect, dust, and spray.

The ‘Junk Drawer’
As a kid, my parents kept what they affectionately called a ‘junk drawer’. A variety of pens, rubber bands, tools, and nails always ended up calling this drawer home. Today, I have my very own ‘junk drawer’ filled with office supplies, pens, sticky notes, and my well-stocked selection of tea.  What helps here? Dividers and regular cleaning. Inevitably, we all end up with 34 pens and only use one consistently.  Share the wealth and keep it clean!

Pilers or Filers
An old adage of HON many years ago stated that people were divided into two groups: Pilers or Filers. Regardless of which group you fall into, paper management is key! One of my favorite paper management features is the Voi® Cube (HLSL1212) – shown below in the color Pool. Not only does it add the final touch to your contemporary workstation, but it’s a functional and effective paper management tool. Once you have one, you’ll never let it go!

Your Digital Desktop
That’s right– don’t think your virtual desktop is getting away so easily! If you can’t see your desktop background through the maze of desktop icons, it’s time to put those folders to good use. There are plenty of ways to digitally file your records and documents; pick a plan and stick to it. Though it may, at times, feel like Folder-ception, folders can be used within folders – just make sure that your labyrinth can be navigated with an intuitive naming system.

Hopefully these tips can help get your corner of the workstation in order – share yours below!

Cupid and the Stork are delivering two special gifts this month: Valentine’s Day and the celebration of Voi’s 5th year in the HON product portfolio!  In the spirit of Valentine’s Day and Voi’s 5th “birthday” with HON, here are 5 things we love about Voi:

  1. It’s Flexible! Voi can provide a teaming, semi-private, or private office solution with its variety of worksurface, storage, and privacy.HON Voi
  2. It’s Modern, Transitional, and Traditional! 3. It helps you future-proof! Since Voi is comprised of modular components and non-handed designs, it can be easily re-arranged into different layouts, repurposed, and expanded as the needs of your work space change.HON Voi

Everyone has a goal at the beginning of a new year, but we all know it’s easy to get distracted from the goals we set for ourselves. If you’re looking to be more organized, here are a few of my favorite tips to stay focused on this goal in 2016.

1. Declutter your desk. With great new storage options from HON, there’s never been a better time to clear out some space. Too much paperwork saved up on your worksurface? If you don’t need to reference it often, consider filing it as archival storage using HON Flagship – or recycle it! If you’ll need to keep the documents close for everyday use, our new Voi Standing Height storage or recently introduced Contain pedestals and towers are just a few of HON’s wide variety of active storage options.

HON Flagship, Voi and Contain storage options2. Clean out your inbox. It seems like every other week I get a message that my mailbox is almost full. Now is a great time to sift through the important emails and weed out the junk. Start 2016 with a clean email box so you’ll be ready to tackle the essential tasks.

3. When spring rolls around, weed through your closet and donate any clothing items you didn’t wear all winter. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it for 6 months, it has to go! Consider doing this every quarter so you can start each season fresh with an organized closet and set your best foot forward in the office.

4. Set reminders to help you check in on your progress. Don’t let half the year pass before you mobilize! Keep your tasks and calendar organized so you can put all your effort into getting the job done.

What are some of your favorite ways to stay organized? How do you use HON solutions to support your organizational goals?

Though we may never see the clever remake of the classic film, The Man Who Knew Too Much (About Office Furniture), the world of office furniture has its share of secrets. If you’re new to the industry, I’ve created a list of the top ten things I think you should know!

PART 1

  1. Secret Identity: Serial Number.

Even if your desk is under cover (literally covered with phones, computers, etc.), once we have a serial number, we can tell you all there is to know about a particular product. Our unique serial numbers easily provide our HON members with everything they need: original order information, model numbers, production year, and even if we’ve spoken to you before about that unit.

  1. The Name is Rail. Hang Rail.

The secret agents of the office furniture world? Hangrails. Their aliases include, but are not limited to: File Bar, Rails, Hanging File Bars, Dividers, or simply put, ‘those things the folders hang on.’ You’ve got side-to-side (standard on steel laterals) or front-to-back (an accessory) or even cross rails (standard on laminate laterals). The good thing about hangrails is that, if you have your storage product’s serial number, our stealthy HON Customer Support team can easily identify which hangrail (or cross rail) you need.

  1. The Language of HON

A good spy learns to speak multiple languages, and we’re right in line. Our secret language is model numbers. HIWM1 translates to HON Ignition Work Mid-Back. HCG6? HON Ceres Guest Chair.  Moreover, the majority of our series all have a common starter. For instance, the 10500 series models all begin with H105 and all Voi models begin with HLSL. Additionally, some of our models also handily list their dimensions: a Preside 52” X 240” veneer boat shaped table top is model number HTVB52240.

  1. Any Parting Words?

Parts are Mr. Hang Rail’s partner in crime. They wear many disguises, including the role of a ‘Finished Good’. Anything that has a model number is technically a ‘Finished Good’ item. Occasionally, this can extend into the realm of parts; take model HFLDGRMT for example. Though this is a grommet (typically a part), it’s a ‘Finished Good’ item because it has a model number.

  1. Bridging the Gap

Fortunately, bridges are not just used to cross bodies of water and a return doesn’t just mean coming back. Workstation configurations involve many different types of product. Desks and Credenzas, though similar, are different. The main difference is the depth of the work surface; a desk is between 30”-36” deep, whereas a credenza is 24” or less. Bridges can link the two, or a return can be used to create an “L” Workstation.

Not sure what an “L” workstation is? Check back Thursday  for Part 2!
