If you’re anything like me, I love finding new ways to design my spaces – at home and in the office! With these 8 simple tips, you can re-decorate your workspace just in time for the holidays.

1. Add a Pop of Color

With HON’s latest fabric refresh, there are hundreds of options from which to choose that can bring life into your office this winter (my personal favorite is the Polka – Very Berry)! HON has created inspirational color palettes to make it easy to envision the right color scheme for your space. Have fun with it! Be BOLD and add patterns, or select colors that fit the season. There is no better way to make a statement to your customers, catch the attention of your guests or increase employee morale around the office than by adding a pop of color!

2. Add Whiteboards to Foster Creativity & Collaboration

Generally, we associate whiteboards with education settings, but they are also used in office spaces to foster creativity and collaboration. For example, we use whiteboards a lot in my department to give our sales team a place to brainstorm ideas, write daily goals, or even inspire each other with inspirational quotes of the week! In my experience, whiteboards can help keep people focused, allow them to collaborate with one another, and also boost productivity and creativity. To make it really easy to add to your space, HON offers both wall-mounted whiteboards and mobile whiteboards. You can even get creative and use glass stacker panels as a writing surface!

3. Create Alternative Places to Sit

Creating additional seating could be as simple as placing a cushion on your credenza or pedestal. This allows you to have short impromptu meetings right at your work space.  It’s an inexpensive way to not only create another option for seating, but also allows you to decorate your space with more fun fabrics!

4. Go Modular!

With HON’s full offering, there are so many options to choose from. Why not mix things up? HON’s soft seating line, Flock, allows you to connect multiple lounge seats together and reconfigure them in multiple designs. Plus, you can add Flock minis that can double as additional seating or workspaces when paired with the new laminate toppers! Another great product line for going modular is Voi desking with Accelerate workstations. Not only can you add a modern look with the open o-legs, but you can also create 120° workstation pods. How cool is the layout below!?

While I will always love a classic HON vertical file, Contain is quickly becoming one of my favorites.  HON has recently expanded the Contain storage portfolio, so here are 4 ways you can get creative with this collection in your own workplace.

1.Optimize Use of Shared Areas

With the growing number of collaborative spaces in today’s workplace, I recommend adding Contain storage to keep these areas versatile and organized.  A typical shared space can be used to host a business lunch at noon and then for a team meeting in the afternoon. Contain credenzas are perfect for storing anything from flatware and plates to notebooks and pens which allows for seamless transitions between these shared spaces throughout the workday.

2. Separation of Spaces

Contain allows you to create boundaries while still promoting an open environment.  Pathways can be created by arranging a line of low credenzas or divide individual workstations by placing a tower between worksurfaces – all while gaining additional storage space.

3. Rethink the Private Office

If you need to revitalize your private office, Contain storage pieces work great with HON desks.  Create your own custom desk by combining Voi worksurfaces and wall mounted storage with a mixture of Contain credenzas, pedestals and towers.  Not only will Contain keep you organized, but it will also allow you to be creative with your finishes by choosing from endless combinations of laminate, paint and pull options.

4. Collaborate by Adding Cushions

Make Contain collaborative by adding cushions to your pedestals and credenzas.  Cushions are perfect for allowing you and your co-workers to have those impromptu meetings or quick strategy sessions – they also add a fun pop of color and pattern to your space!

PART 2

To complete Tuesday’s post, Part 1: The Top Ten Secrets of the Office Furniture World, read on below for 5 more things you should know about this industry:

  1. Lettered!

While the secret agents of Men In Black choose letters for their identity, we’ve yet to nickname our Customer Support members by the same token (we’ll get back to you on that). For everything else, we stick to the alphabet.  ‘L’ workstations typically involve a desk or credenza and a return, thus making the shape look like the letter  ‘L’. ‘U’ workstations usually involve three parts: a desk, bridge, and a credenza.

  1. Quartermaster’s Gift: A Pricer

Though it’s not an exploding pen or microphone lipstick tube, the Pricer has plenty of perks. Whether you need to know how to specify a Ceres task chair or how many people can sit at a 240” Preside conference table (we recommend 18-20), the pricer can answer the majority of your product questions. Here are a couple of handy tips: the seating sections are arranged alphabetically by series name, basyx by HON products are always listed at the end of the section, and Preside’s specifying information lists the majority of our edge profiles all in one place for easy viewing (located on page 632 in your 2015 pricer).

  1. The BIFMA Identity

While ANSI/BIFMA may sound like something Jason Bourne might reference, it’s actually our industry standard for seating weight ratings. All HON seating products (including chairs, credenza cushions, and pedestal cushions) are rated to the standard 250 lbs. Fortunately, we also go above and beyond – our pricer calls out any series that is rated for more than the standard. For instance, Endorse is rated at 300 lbs, Versant at 350 lbs, the Ignition HIWM8 at 450 lbs, and our new Soothe HHCG50 is rated to 750 lbs! Be sure to check the bullet points at the top of the page for additional series ratings!

  1. Finish Up!

Think you have the X-Factor to be a phantom in the Twilight? A good way to check your Affinity for the game is by testing your mettle. Dash out to hon.com for an excellent source of fabric and finish information. Give it a Chance! Its easy search capabilities allow access to fabric cards and online swatches, and with our vast Lineup of available fabrics, it will give you Insight into our textiles!

  1. Our Agents: Customer Support

Even the best spy team can’t hold a candle to our Customer Support team; we believe we have the best in the industry. Through extensive product and customer solutions training, our members know what it means to be HON ready. Whether you have a complex chair question that can be answered by our Technical Product experts or an inquiry on a state contract that our government team can remedy, our specialty teams are here to assist.

Though I’ll keep holding out for The Man Who Knew Too Much (About Office Furniture) remake, make sure to share these secrets!

Even though we may get the urge to decorate our workspace just like we do our home, a line must be drawn in the workplace in order to maintain a professional demeanor. Whether you have your own private office or a small workstation, the appearance of it speaks volumes of you as a business professional. Adding your own personal touch can make you feel more at home, but it’s important to not over-do it. Here are some tips:

  • Keep it neat and clean. This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people brush this off. Wiping up the dust and keeping everything in order can make you seem more reliable to your co-workers, and help you feel and appear more organized.Keep it clean
  • Keep personal items personal. Clothing, hygiene products, and other personal items should be tucked away if they’re not work-related. For example, a spare drawer in a HON pedestal works great when I want to store my snacks, shoes, or purse.Storage
  • Add a personal but professional touch. Moderation is key. Adding a few framed pictures of you and your family on vacation last year and other tasteful décor is a great way of displaying your personality and balanced life. Too much of this can make your space seem cluttered and give the impression that you’re not concentrating enough on work.Personal Touch
  • Represent your company with class. Hang up that award you earned for being “Employee of the Year” with pride or anything else that your place of employment has given you. However, it’s important that your workspace represents a humble personality by not having too many of these items around to make it seem like you’re bragging.

What are some other ways you decorate your professional workspace?
