With the new year quickly approaching, everyone begins to think of their New Year’s resolutions.  Some will give up sugary foods or try to stop a bad habit while others will commit to a new exercise program or weight loss goal.  Whatever the resolution happens to be, it is usually made in hopes of becoming a better you.  Why not make a resolution for healthier habits that extend to the workplace as well as at home?


To start off the new year with a ‘healthier you’ focus, there are several things you can incorporate into your workday to achieve this goal.  Whether it be packing healthy snacks to keep at your workstation for when that sugar craving hits or taking a fresh air break a couple of times a day to refocus and recharge your mind.  One of the most effective ways to boost productivity and re-energize is to get up and move even if for only a few minutes at a time.

Staying in one position for extended periods of time has been shown to be a risk factor for serious illnesses that may have long lasting side effects.  By making small changes, such as changing positions, taking a quick walking break at least once an hour throughout the day and utilizing lunch hours for a quick walk around the block, can not only cut down on these risks but improve your mood and productivity.

What can we do in the workplace to get employees up and moving throughout the day without disrupting the workflow?

  • Vary where you complete your work tasks throughout the floor plan so you can change positions frequently
  • Walk over to someone’s desk vs sending an email to your colleagues
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Set a reminder to stand up every hour for a few minutes or more
  • Encourage employees to eat lunch away from their desks

  • Park your car further away from the door or walk/bike to and from work if you are local
  • Have a quick stand-up meeting in a common area vs a sit down in a conference room

Whatever you decide to do, it’s easy to make a commitment to becoming a healthier you in 2018. Our bodies were not designed to sit still for hours at a time and these simple steps can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing.  Make a resolution this new year to get up and move by implementing small changes throughout your workday.  You are worth it!



Everyone has a goal at the beginning of a new year, but we all know it’s easy to get distracted from the goals we set for ourselves. If you’re looking to be more organized, here are a few of my favorite tips to stay focused on this goal in 2016.

Now is a great time to sift through the important emails and weed out the junk. Start 2016 with a clean email box so you’ll be ready to tackle the essential tasks.

3. When spring rolls around, weed through your closet and donate any clothing items you didn’t wear all winter. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it for 6 months, it has to go! Consider doing this every quarter so you can start each season fresh with an organized closet and set your best foot forward in the office.

4. Set reminders to help you check in on your progress. Don’t let half the year pass before you mobilize! Keep your tasks and calendar organized so you can put all your effort into getting the job done.

It’s that time of the year again – time to choose your New Year’s Resolutions. Intentions are always high to work out more, eat healthier, spend less money, etc. According to a article titled This Year’s Top New Year’s Resolution? Fitness!!, some of the top New Year’s resolutions for 2015 were to stay fit and healthy, lose weight, and get organized. If any of these resolutions are on your list for next year, how can you integrate them into your work schedule at the office?

  1. Eat Healthy: Sometimes easier said than done, especially when you enjoy food day with your team members. The next time you have a food day in the office, plan on bringing a fruit or veggie tray. You may be surprised just how many of your coworkers will enjoy your dish. Not only will you feel great about your food choice, but you won’t be breaking your resolution.
  2. Stay Fit: How many of us set the alarm early in the morning with intentions to work out before you head to the office? When that doesn’t happen, we make plans to work out after we leave work. Sometimes we’re too tired, arrive home later than expected, or just want to watch our favorite shows on TV. If this is you, why not work out during your work day? During your lunch period, plan on taking a walk for the first 15-30 minutes (depending on the length of your lunch break) and enjoy your lunch for the rest of your break. Take occasional breaks throughout the day to walk to the water fountain, restroom, or copy machine.
  3. Get Organized: Are you a list maker? Now may be the time to start! A great way to get organized at work is to start your morning off by creating a To Do list, outlining the tasks that must be completed by end of day and tasks that you want to finish later if you have time. At the end of the day and before you leave the office, take a look at your list to see what you accomplished. If a task needs to be postponed, simply add it to tomorrow’s list and you’ll be a step ahead when the next morning rolls around!
