Most products that we use in our daily lives go through some form of testing before they are launched into the market. This is an important step to verify user safety, environmental compliance, and ultimately a positive overall experience. Have you ever thought about how your office furniture is tested? Here at HON we have an A2LA Certified Product Test Lab, an A2LA Certified Pack Lab, a Parts Approval Lab and a Color Lab, so you could say we take our testing very seriously!

IMG_6896

HON engineers test Empower Benching above and beyond BIFMA with 7900 lbs on 20 stations!

The first test we conduct is part-specific, and it takes place in what we call our Parts Approval Lab. For this test, we scan our parts with a laser and the software generates a 3D color map that will tell us exactly how much, if any, the part varies from the print. For example, when we model the back of a chair, we scan those parts to verify that all contours are exactly how we modeled it.

The second test validates our colors, and this takes place in our Color Lab. Dedicated members verify the colors of each part match the exact color composition that is specified, regardless of the material that is used. We check for consistency so parts don’t vary, which gets us the same great look every time.

The third test is shipment testing, where we simulate what could happen during the shipping and handling process. This category has three areas:

  1. Compression testing – simulates products being stacked in a warehouse
  2. Drop testing – simulates the possibility of products being dropped during a delivery or installation
  3. Vibration testing – simulates placing the packaged product in a semi-trailer to make sure the packaging doesn’t cause any scratches

We pay attention to details and obsess over small things, so we even go as far as testing in both freezing and humid climates to make sure our packaging can withstand any end destination.

The fourth test is structural and fatigue testing to ensure the safety of the end user. This testing simulates different situations in which the end users may find themselves, such as an individual putting books into an overhead in a panel system.

To deliver long-lasting products, we also test fatigue scenarios, such as the “caster durability” test.  In this test we simulate the chair rolling for a pre-determined distance to ensure the casters will remain dependable through the lifetime of the product.

These are abusive tests, meaning the forces we use are beyond what would be generated in normal use. Using both BIFMA test standards and our own, we make sure the safety of the end user is not in jeopardy.

The fifth test looks at the user interface and it includes standards that HON created to guarantee the consistent comfort of our products. For example, have you ever thought about the amount of force required to push the button for raising and lowering your task chair arms? Well, our engineers did, and alas a test standard was written for it! We standardize on this to make sure the user experience is as comfortable as possible.

The last test is what we call Live Environment Testing. Considering we work in an office ourselves, we are often asked the question “would you use this product in your own office?”. So, to answer this question, we made it a test requirement! As part of our full test plan, our engineers seek out members in the office with fresh eyes to the product and ask them to test it out. For example, I was once asked to use a prototype Ignition® 2.0 task chair at my workstation for a few days and provide feedback. This test is also a fun way for HON to engage with our community, such as getting feedback from the local community college or doctor’s office. After this process, the project teams compile the feedback and make any final improvements to the product. This type of testing is very important to make sure we can deliver the best possible product.

So, now you know the science behind what it takes to deliver the best office furniture on the market. If you would like to see inside our test lab, check out this video and be sure to visit hon.com to view our product brochures!

“BIFMA” stands for “Business + Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association”, and it is the “not-for-profit trade association for business and institutional furniture manufacturers”. They create and maintain the industry safety standard, as well as sustainability standard, and educate customers on the importance of product performance. You can read more about BIFMA here.

“A2LA” stands for “American Association for Laboratory Accreditation” and it is an organization that gives accreditation to all types of laboratories in accordance with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards. At HNI we place such a high value on quality assurance that we go through this accreditation process and gain the accountability of this third-party. You can read more about A2LA here .

It’s the remix to Ignition,
you know HON’s on a mission
to keep you rollin’ at work
and have all your coworkers wishin’
their chairs were made here at HON.
That’s how we get things done.
Seating is evolving, baby, your workday’s about to get fun…

Ok, I had to! But even the most perfect parody song doesn’t tell the full story of the evolution of Ignition.  As HON’s best-selling seating line, it seemed an impossible feat to find even one way to make it better (let alone over 10, but who is counting?). But HON knew that, if the workplace was evolving, its furniture needed to evolve with it.

1336-1351-1003_Hon Ignition_Open area_1Ignition was first introduced in 2009 as an all-in-one seating solution to provide the perfect fit for every body type, work style and office activity. HON recognized that personalized comfort energizes a workforce, and this idea quickly sparked new designs that ignited a movement toward a host of ergonomic and aesthetic enhancements to help you work better.

Why personalization? The ability to personalize Ignition 2.0 is how we deliver your perfect fit. Take advantage of 4 new custom controls, stabilize your back with an easy-to-adjust lumbar support, or modify the quick-adjust back to adapt to your specific needs and preferences. Choose between a Black frame and the new Titanium option, then pick from an expanded fabric selection to coordinate with an existing office aesthetic or just show off your personal style.

Why comfort? Ignition 2.0. was designed to comfortably, flexibly, dynamically move you to change the world. Tailored to your body, new molded seat foam invites you to sit in your chair, rather than on it. The enhanced back design now includes ilira®-stretch mesh that flexes in every direction to create a soft, responsive feel and target support where it’s needed most – no matter what your workday brings.

Ignition StudioStill looking for more reasons to love Ignition 2.0?

Let me hear you whoot, whoot, because we’ll give it to you cheap, cheap!

(Last song reference, I promise!) A knocked down (KD) version of the task chair with patent-pending Quick Connect arms is also available, offering slimmer packaging and allowing Ignition 2.0 to reach a lower price point than ever before.

And last, but not least. When you buy Ignition chairs, you’re not just buying inspired practical solutions – you’re buying quality, American designed, engineered and assembled furniture backed by a lifetime warranty and a network of dealers.

PART 2

To complete Tuesday’s post, Part 1: The Top Ten Secrets of the Office Furniture World, read on below for 5 more things you should know about this industry:

  1. Lettered!

While the secret agents of Men In Black choose letters for their identity, we’ve yet to nickname our Customer Support members by the same token (we’ll get back to you on that). For everything else, we stick to the alphabet.  ‘L’ workstations typically involve a desk or credenza and a return, thus making the shape look like the letter  ‘L’. ‘U’ workstations usually involve three parts: a desk, bridge, and a credenza.

  1. Quartermaster’s Gift: A Pricer

Though it’s not an exploding pen or microphone lipstick tube, the Pricer has plenty of perks. Whether you need to know how to specify a Ceres task chair or how many people can sit at a 240” Preside conference table (we recommend 18-20), the pricer can answer the majority of your product questions. Here are a couple of handy tips: the seating sections are arranged alphabetically by series name, basyx by HON products are always listed at the end of the section, and Preside’s specifying information lists the majority of our edge profiles all in one place for easy viewing (located on page 632 in your 2015 pricer).

  1. The BIFMA Identity

While ANSI/BIFMA may sound like something Jason Bourne might reference, it’s actually our industry standard for seating weight ratings. All HON seating products (including chairs, credenza cushions, and pedestal cushions) are rated to the standard 250 lbs. Fortunately, we also go above and beyond – our pricer calls out any series that is rated for more than the standard. For instance, Endorse is rated at 300 lbs, Versant at 350 lbs, the Ignition HIWM8 at 450 lbs, and our new Soothe HHCG50 is rated to 750 lbs! Be sure to check the bullet points at the top of the page for additional series ratings!

  1. Finish Up!

Think you have the X-Factor to be a phantom in the Twilight? A good way to check your Affinity for the game is by testing your mettle. Dash out to hon.com for an excellent source of fabric and finish information. Give it a Chance! Its easy search capabilities allow access to fabric cards and online swatches, and with our vast Lineup of available fabrics, it will give you Insight into our textiles!

  1. Our Agents: Customer Support

Even the best spy team can’t hold a candle to our Customer Support team; we believe we have the best in the industry. Through extensive product and customer solutions training, our members know what it means to be HON ready. Whether you have a complex chair question that can be answered by our Technical Product experts or an inquiry on a state contract that our government team can remedy, our specialty teams are here to assist.

Though I’ll keep holding out for The Man Who Knew Too Much (About Office Furniture) remake, make sure to share these secrets!

Office Furniture Rocks

When I joined the HON Marketing team last year, I was completely new to the office furniture world. It didn’t take me long to realize that, the moment you enter this industry, there are certain aspects of your everyday life that are forever changed:

1.  Vacations
Most people would probably want to check out from work on a vacation, but those of us in this field know that’s not how it works. My trips turn into a personal scavenger hunt to find HON product around the world or to spot a HON truck while I’m on the road. Plus, these sightings make great #HONSpotted posts on social media!

2.  Routine Appointments
You think you’ve scheduled an innocent trip to the dentist, but once you walk into that reception area and sit down in an Ignition lounge chair, it’s impossible not to tell everyone in the room that you are part of the team that made that chair possible. You aren’t afraid to turn chairs upside down during routine health check-ups, and instantly transform into a savvy Soothe salesperson whenever a patient room is lacking HON furniture.

3.  Common Office Lingo
You find yourself correcting your friends and family when they say the “C” word (it’s not a cubicle, it’s a workstation!). You also feel like it’s your job to educate people on the specific type of chair they sit in (it’s not just a chair, it’s a task chair) as well as their storage choices (Contain credenzas are a great solution for active storage needs, for instance).

4.  Movies
When you work in the office furniture industry, it’s not unusual to pause a movie every few minutes to analyze the furniture and celebrate loudly when you spot HON products….or to pause it, snap a photo of the TV screen, and send it via group text to all of your coworkers so you can talk about how much more you now love said movie.

5.  Organization
Let’s be honest, filing bills is no fun…unless you’re using a HON filing cabinet! When you understand the history behind how our products have evolved, from recipe card boxes made out of recycled steel to comprehensive workplace solutions, simple storage techniques have a whole new meaning.

6.  Your own home
I’ve had recurring dreams since NeoCon about finding space in my home for all of the awesome new HON furniture from our Chicago showroom, and I’ve found that there’s always a way to add it to your existing décor. Updating a home office? A new Height Adjustable Table will look great! Redecorating a playroom? Adding some Flock minis with a fun new fabric should do the trick!

7.  Where you work
When you sit in the chair you designed, or work at the desk you’re tasked to create marketing campaigns around all day long, you develop a whole new level of appreciation for the furniture that supports you throughout the day. And, when you know you can trust the tools that support you, it’s easier to make a difference and feel ready to change the world.

How has office furniture changed your life?

Whether you attended NeoCon 2015 in person or participated in the fun through social media and HON World, I think we can all agree that last week’s show was one to remember. As the social media manager for HON, I often have the privilege to represent our company at exciting events as well as the enjoyable challenge of capturing HON happenings on film. I’m charged with the mission of meeting new people and finding creative ways to share our story through digital tools. But, at the heart of it all, my job is to spark engaging and meaningful conversation with you.

This year at NeoCon, our showroom was designed to ignite conversation – about HON, about office furniture, and about people and what they need to be successful. We wanted to inspire our showroom guests through color, simple designs, and purposeful furniture solutions. We aimed to bring a piece of Iowa and our longstanding value of inspired practicality to the bustling city of Chicago. And, we did just that.

Jerry Dittmer, President of The HON Company, summed it up best when he said “we took practical and simple to a whole new level.”

I hope you were able to visit us in person last week; but, if not, below are some of my favorite #HONSpotted images that were posted on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram throughout the event so you won’t miss out on the HON conversations of NeoCon 2015!

Bringing Iowa to Chicago
No matter where we go, we’re always proud of where we come from, so we decked out the reception desk with a huge graphic of Muscatine, Iowa’s well-known Beckey Bridge. Just as the bridge welcomes you to HON Headquarters in Iowa, it now welcomes you in Chicago.

Iowa Roots

Inspired Practicality
It’s who we are and who we have been since our founding, so our clean and simple designs in this year’s showroom were intentionally created to demonstrate this core value at HON.

HON Inspired Practicality

New Products
All of the new product launches and expansions that were showcased at NeoCon this year are market driven and open for orders today, not sometime down the road. Some of the highlights this year included new Height-Adjustable Tables, new Mocha and Pinnacle laminates and our comprehensive Soothe® line for healthcare featuring the Soothe patient recliner, guest seating and tables.

New Products

Color
We’ve introduced several new fabrics and finishes this year, and by several I mean over 900 new seating fabric colors and 50 new panel colors! That was reason enough for us to to make an extra splash with pops of bright color throughout the space.

Color

HON Swag
What’s a trade show without some giveaways? Or, as we call it, HON swag? This year, everyone who visited the HON showroom could go home with HON lip balms and bags (which came in handy when it rained the first day!). Those who traveled by flight and snapped a photo of one of our new airport ads on their way to the event were also given a pair of HON-inspired argyle socks.

HON Swag Giveaways

Building Relationships
We recognize and appreciate that our partners are HON storytellers out on the front lines, so a highlight of NeoCon every year is meeting and catching up with the people most important to us and our mission.

HON Dealers and Partners

Fun!
We amped up our social media activities this year with props and 3D hashtags. There were lots of smiles and laughs shared as we all tried to master the selfie stick and pose with speech bubbles that boasted sayings like “office furniture rocks” (because we all know it does).

NeoCon Fun

Check out The HON Company on social media for more NeoCon photos and, more importantly, join in our online conversation. Whenever you’re attending an event with us, spot a HON truck or advertisement on your travels, or just want to show off a recent installation, tag us with #HONSpotted so we can be a part of it with you!

The snow is melting, days are getting longer and the birds are returning home from their hiatus down south. As the birds head north, all 30 Major League Baseball teams head south to begin spring training. With the warm up of this American pastime, it is only appropriate to give those non-baseball lovers an analogy between baseball and office furniture to help them understand what they’ve missed and what to expect in the coming years. So sit back and relax, (no pun intended) while enjoying our comparison between baseball and office furniture, HON style.

card1rev1

Where to start? How about “The Sultan of Swat,” “The Colossus of Clout,” “The Great Bambino,” Mr. Babe Ruth!  The only chair that has stood the test of time and is still famous like Babe Ruth is the Pillow-Soft® Executive High-back chair. It doesn’t matter that today’s ‘players’ are slimmer and lower profile, this big comfy model is still a top seller! As a wise man once said, “Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.”

From the big and soft to the best money can buy, we jump right to the top! Ceres is the top of the line for The HON Company. If you want comfort, style and functionality then you want Ceres. In baseball we call Ceres® the New York Yankees. You may need to spend a little more to get the best, but you will not regret it!

What if you don’t have the extra cash to spend? Then you need to get the most value for your buck. Please welcome in the most transactional line of furniture HON has to offer, basyx® by HON! Reminiscent of the Oakland Athletics this line of furniture can compete with any and all competitors. At times this line will fly under the radar but when the game is on the line and it is getting close to the last out, you know it will be in the hunt for the win!
