If you’ve ever had any training in ergonomics, you probably know that one advantage of having an ergonomically-designed workspace is employee retention. An ergonomic workspace designed to promote wellness can help employees feel valued by management, increase their sense of worth and improve productivity. With HON, you can create healthier workspaces without sacrificing design. Take a look at the environment ideas below to see how you can create an office that is both functional and fashionable:

1. Keep Ergonomics in Mind While Maximizing the Office Footprint

Commercial real estate square footage is valuable, but just because you’re trying to save space doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice ergonomics or looks—check out this great semi-private office setup that uses Voi® modular desks and the Ceres® task chair:

Maximize your office footprint with ergonomic solutions from HON

Without wasting any office footprint, this configuration empowers two individuals to choose between a sitting or standing height work position throughout the day. The Ceres task chair has been designed to reduce pressure on the backs of the legs and evenly distribute weight for proper support.

2. Make the Workspace Employee-Friendly

Sometimes leaving your bed in the morning is hard, and having to go into an office that isn’t visually inviting doesn’t make that task any easier. Help alleviate some of that difficulty by using elements like HON’s recently expanded active storage line – Contain®.

Make your workplace employee-friendly with HON

As offices continue to shift away from archival storage there’s a greater need for active storage that employees can use for more personal items. Contain is a perfect fit for those needs. Pair it with Voi, the Ceres task chair and some Flock® modular lounge seating and you’ve got a work area that has enough privacy to allow work to be completed, but is also a warm and inviting space where employees will want to spend their time.

3. Create an Office that Adapts to New Work Styles

Long gone are the days of individuals working heads-down in a cubicle for 8 hours—with the rise of the millennial generation, the way that people get work done is changing just as quickly as the age bracket of employees. There is an increased focus on collaboration in today’s office design that can be addressed by using products that cater to impromptu meetings, are technologically powered, and also provide a place to get away from your desk for a change of pace and to refresh your mind. Accommodate™ and Arrange™, HON’s newest seating and table lines, support an active and collaborative work style.

Use versatile office furniture to create functional workspaces

While providing a coordinated design aesthetic that could be utilized in any part of an office, these complementary product lines are versatile in their functionality as well. Use them in a café space that could also become an impromptu conference room, a break room where employees can have a midday snack and charge their phones, or pair with Flock for more of a booth-style solution.

The number of ways to style a workspace are endless, but one thing is certain: there’s no reason why an office can’t be both efficient and enjoyable.

What are your favorite new trends in office furniture and workplace design?

A couple months ago I read an article about the impact March Madness has on a company’s workforce. It is estimated that, during the month of March, employers in America lose up to $4B in productivity as a result of employees watching live games and tracking their playoff brackets.

But the truth is, distractions like these exist every day, and not just because of March Madness. As office furniture continues to trend towards more light-scale and open plan furniture, it’s important that we don’t forget the importance of heads-down, focused work. The HON Company provides many solutions that decrease the risk of disruptions, especially within an open plan office. Here are a few examples of our favorites:

Voi® Privacy Screens
Voi privacy screens provide a division of workspace between users, while also offering an opportunity to add a pop of color.

Panel Systems with Frameless Glass
Adding frameless glass on top of panels allows light to shine through while breaking up the visibility between users. You can tailor this premium look to your own preference by choosing between clear or frosted glass.

Shared Overhead Storage between Users
In addition to distractions being a bother for employees in an open floorplan, these layouts typically have less storage. Using shared overheads between users is a great way to address both of these concerns.

What are some office design tips you use to minimize distractions in the open office space?

Everyone has a goal at the beginning of a new year, but we all know it’s easy to get distracted from the goals we set for ourselves. If you’re looking to be more organized, here are a few of my favorite tips to stay focused on this goal in 2016.

1. Declutter your desk. With great new storage options from HON, there’s never been a better time to clear out some space. Too much paperwork saved up on your worksurface? If you don’t need to reference it often, consider filing it as archival storage using HON Flagship – or recycle it! If you’ll need to keep the documents close for everyday use, our new Voi Standing Height storage or recently introduced Contain pedestals and towers are just a few of HON’s wide variety of active storage options.

Now is a great time to sift through the important emails and weed out the junk. Start 2016 with a clean email box so you’ll be ready to tackle the essential tasks.

3. When spring rolls around, weed through your closet and donate any clothing items you didn’t wear all winter. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it for 6 months, it has to go! Consider doing this every quarter so you can start each season fresh with an organized closet and set your best foot forward in the office.

4. Set reminders to help you check in on your progress. Don’t let half the year pass before you mobilize! Keep your tasks and calendar organized so you can put all your effort into getting the job done.

Trends are a part of consumer life; there is no getting around it. Whether it is the latest, most technologically advanced smartphone or a new clothing style, trends influence our buying, plain and simple. The office furniture industry is not immune to this phenomenon. As a manufacturer, we are faced with the challenge of an ever-changing market and it is our job to meet the demands of a diverse mix of customers in which we serve.

A prominent movement of the modern workplace is an environment that welcomes a lighter and more open aesthetic quality. We see brighter colors around offices, and it is apparent that the user preferences have been shifting this way. Back in 2011, HON launched a new desking series; Voi. Voi translates in Italian to you and is all about conforming to the needs of any working environment and user.

voi2

Voi’s contemporary appearance allows great flexibility and creative options. It incorporates mixed materials such as steel O-Leg supports, laminate and veneer surfaces, and fabric applications; it really is a designer’s open canvas for expression. Not only is a Voi user free to roam conceptually with design elements, but they will not find themselves in a fixed or confined work area. Collaboration in the workplace is on the rise. More and more companies are realizing the beauty and benefits to an interpersonal workplace, and the physical environment in which this takes place is imperative to its success.

At HON, we take pride in the opportunity to pave the way for people and ideas to come together. With Voi, collaboration is made easy. It fosters this through furniture solutions that are versatile such as multiple styles of open plan configurations. It inspires impromptu meetings with colleagues through products such as credenzas and mobile pedestals that create a comfortable sit with ample workspace, as seen in the above image.

Voi3

Open. Brighter. Collaborative. These are all words that describe the market needs that led to the inception of Voi. However, one more very important need that our users are calling for is coordinated. Voi does not stop at being a great desking solution for the open and collaborative concept. Voi has the ability to outfit an entire office from the mid level employee to the executives. It is a comprehensive selection of both laminate and veneer casegoods that can simultaneously accommodate simplicity and sophistication. In fact, at HON Headquarters in Muscatine, Iowa, Voi is utilized throughout all levels. Even the President of our company sits in Voi! For those looking for a coordinated look throughout their office, Voi is a perfect fit.

It’s October!  That means the Iowa (and in my case, D.C.) humidity is disappearing, the leaves are changing and everyone is getting creative with carving pumpkins, designing Halloween costumes, and making crafts found on Pinterest.

Your office can also be a place to harness your creativity this season.  Here are a few great ideas!

1. Create a ‘table seat’ in call rooms or offices. It can be a soft seat one minute and a table the next.

How: Place the top from the Flock Personal Table on a Flock Mini Ottoman

2. Add inviting, modern, and light seating to a touch-down area (as seen in our newly renovated New York City Resource Center!)

Green2

How: Use the Flock Mini Ottoman as touch-down seating rather than a standard task chair for a more modern look

3. Integrate bright pops of colors so panels look like fun workstations rather than “cubicles”

Green4

How: Use the Appoint seating fabric on select HON panel systems and tackboards

Green3

4. Use mobile storage for your company’s merchandise, office supplies, etc.

How: Customize the number and height of shelves and bins in HON’s Smartlink Modular Storage cabinet

5. Make your storage serve a dual purpose: Storage and a Seat

Green Office Design - HON Initiate

Even though green may be our favorite color at HON, this is not exactly what having a green office means. The design industry has moved leaps and bounds in the last decade to improve the quality and sustainability of the built environment. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is a nonprofit organization committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings (usgbc.org). Okay, so how exactly do they decide what is considered cost-efficient and energy-saving?

LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a rating system used by the USGBC to determine how sustainable a project is, by a list of requirements that the project must meet. Since no two projects are alike, LEED has several categories for which a project can fall under to be rated. The categories range from new construction to healthcare all the way to homes and neighborhood development. Once in a category, you are given credits based on sub-categories. The main credit categories for scoring are included below. LEED is much, much more than just a rating system though; to learn more about the USGBC and LEED visit usgbc.org/leed.

Did you know that HON is a proud member of the USGBC? Almost all of our desks, chairs, files and workstations are in compliance with several LEED Interior Design & Construction credits! Here at our headquarters building, HON underwent a major renovation about 3 years ago and became LEED Silver Certified.

Our Initiate® workstations are featured in the image above. Now that looks like green design!
