Low Carbon Footprint. Sustainability. PVC free. If you are in the office furniture world, these words are all too familiar to you. It seems like the majority of office spaces being designed or renovated today are working to achieve some type of green certification. Furniture (and even the fabrics used on your furniture) can play a large part in meeting these qualifications. For this reason, it’s important to be educated on the topic of sustainabillity so you can help consult your customer on making the right decision when designing a more eco-friendly work environment.

Office Furniture green certifications

As a sales representative in the office furniture world, customers frequently ask for products that are built using environmentally safe manufacturing processes or that are built from recycled or recyclable content. This is common on Requests For Quotes (RFQs) from large corporations or government buildings, but where do you start? The key is to look for green furniture certifications – and we aren’t talking about the color!

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental design, is one of the biggest certifications in the office furniture world.  It focuses on how the product is manufactured by paying attention to the potentially harmful materials that go into making the product. LEED also looks at how much of those materials are recyclable and what potentially harmful chemicals may be emitted during the production process. There are several different levels of certifications furniture can achieve through LEED, but the bottom line is this: if it is LEED certified, it is produced in a way that is better for the environment.

The HON Company uses LEED guidelines when manufacturing furniture by using compression molded seat and back components made from 97% recovered wood fiber, which ends up saving over 2,800 trees a year. HON also recycles bales of fabric scraps which keeps 100 tons of waste out of landfills each year. There are several other processes embraced by The HON Company that have led to more than 75% of our products being LEED certified, which you can read more about in our Environmental Responsibility brochure.

HON is focused on sustainability and lean manufacturing

Beyond just our products, The HON Company takes LEED certification very seriously when it comes to buildings as well. The HON Company headquarters is LEED silver certified. When HON headquarters was renovated in 2007, becoming LEED certified was a priority. The HON Washington DC showroom is also LEED Silver certified. HON continues to invest in creating a more sustainable environment by LEED certifying both its properties and products.

Furniture and its materials can play a large role in creating a more eco-friendly and sustainable work environment. The more educated you are on this topic, the better you will be at guiding your customers to the best HON furniture solutions for their office!

Office Furniture Rocks

When I joined the HON Marketing team last year, I was completely new to the office furniture world. It didn’t take me long to realize that, the moment you enter this industry, there are certain aspects of your everyday life that are forever changed:

1.  Vacations
Most people would probably want to check out from work on a vacation, but those of us in this field know that’s not how it works. My trips turn into a personal scavenger hunt to find HON product around the world or to spot a HON truck while I’m on the road. Plus, these sightings make great #HONSpotted posts on social media!

2.  Routine Appointments
You think you’ve scheduled an innocent trip to the dentist, but once you walk into that reception area and sit down in an Ignition lounge chair, it’s impossible not to tell everyone in the room that you are part of the team that made that chair possible. You aren’t afraid to turn chairs upside down during routine health check-ups, and instantly transform into a savvy Soothe salesperson whenever a patient room is lacking HON furniture.

3.  Common Office Lingo
You find yourself correcting your friends and family when they say the “C” word (it’s not a cubicle, it’s a workstation!). You also feel like it’s your job to educate people on the specific type of chair they sit in (it’s not just a chair, it’s a task chair) as well as their storage choices (Contain credenzas are a great solution for active storage needs, for instance).

4.  Movies
When you work in the office furniture industry, it’s not unusual to pause a movie every few minutes to analyze the furniture and celebrate loudly when you spot HON products….or to pause it, snap a photo of the TV screen, and send it via group text to all of your coworkers so you can talk about how much more you now love said movie.

5.  Organization
Let’s be honest, filing bills is no fun…unless you’re using a HON filing cabinet! When you understand the history behind how our products have evolved, from recipe card boxes made out of recycled steel to comprehensive workplace solutions, simple storage techniques have a whole new meaning.

6.  Your own home
I’ve had recurring dreams since NeoCon about finding space in my home for all of the awesome new HON furniture from our Chicago showroom, and I’ve found that there’s always a way to add it to your existing décor. Updating a home office? A new Height Adjustable Table will look great! Redecorating a playroom? Adding some Flock minis with a fun new fabric should do the trick!

7.  Where you work
When you sit in the chair you designed, or work at the desk you’re tasked to create marketing campaigns around all day long, you develop a whole new level of appreciation for the furniture that supports you throughout the day. And, when you know you can trust the tools that support you, it’s easier to make a difference and feel ready to change the world.

How has office furniture changed your life?

It’s October!  That means the Iowa (and in my case, D.C.) humidity is disappearing, the leaves are changing and everyone is getting creative with carving pumpkins, designing Halloween costumes, and making crafts found on Pinterest.

Your office can also be a place to harness your creativity this season.  Here are a few great ideas!

1. Create a ‘table seat’ in call rooms or offices. It can be a soft seat one minute and a table the next.

How: Place the top from the Flock Personal Table on a Flock Mini Ottoman

2. Add inviting, modern, and light seating to a touch-down area (as seen in our newly renovated New York City Resource Center!)

Green2

How: Use the Flock Mini Ottoman as touch-down seating rather than a standard task chair for a more modern look

3. Integrate bright pops of colors so panels look like fun workstations rather than “cubicles”

Green4

How: Use the Appoint seating fabric on select HON panel systems and tackboards

Green3

4. Use mobile storage for your company’s merchandise, office supplies, etc.

green5

How: Customize the number and height of shelves and bins in HON’s Smartlink Modular Storage cabinet

5. Make your storage serve a dual purpose: Storage and a Seat

How: Add a cushion to the Voi credenzas shown here

How have you used furniture creatively to address your needs?

The Roadrunner. The Coyote. Therein lies an endless battle of wits involving Do-It Yourself Tornado Kits, Rocket-Powered Roller Skates, and the obligatory anvil from Acme Inc. Yet, even as a child, I couldn’t understand Wile E. Coyote’s determination to catch the Roadrunner with the seemingly infinite amount of flawed Acme products that ultimately ended in, some might say, epic failures. Moreover, how could Acme continuously pump out gadgetry that resulted in less than perfect outcomes?

To me, it seems that Acme should have taken a stab at the concept of Rapid Continuous Improvement (RCI). The RCI philosophy is an ongoing effort to drive beneficial change along the lines of processes, products, and services by making them more efficient and effective. Here at HON, we employ the RCI philosophy with a multitude of programs. While some are focused on internal processes, many are developed to reduce waste, lower cost, and benefit the customer.

Coloring book23Yes, that is a coloring book sitting on the edge of our desk. And yes, it does benefit my productivity and yours.

Studies have shown that taking regular breaks during the workday can lead to improved productivity and creativity. Additionally, stepping away from the computer screen will give your eyes a break and reduce eye strain.

While I could get up and walk to the restroom or get something to drink for my work breaks, I’ve found that adding a bit of color to a picture helps spark my creativity during a task.

Working your way through a large document or an excel spreadsheet may cause your eyes to cross or your concentration to start to wane. Take a 5 minute break. Stand up, grab a crayon and add a little color to your favorite picture. It’ll get your mind off of what you’re working on for a short time as you attempt to stay in the lines and allow your eyes to look at something different. Then, head back to the task at hand with relaxed eyes, an open mind and get to work.

Currently, there are about five pictures in various stages of colored-ness by coworkers who pass by. They may get done this year, they may not, but no one cares. The coloring artist took a moment away from the computer screen to relax their mind before heading off to accomplish their next task.

What do you do to take a quick work break?

I am sure you have heard that laughter is the best medicine.  When I decided to look into this claim, I found that both the Mayo Clinic and the Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s websites say that laughter can have positive health benefits including:

  •          Improved overall attitude/mood
  •          Reduced stress/tension
  •          Pain relief by triggering the release of endorphins

Both sites also reference that forced smiling and laughter can active the same responses as genuine amusement.

I believe it also stands to reason that this impact is derived by your feelings of humor, not by those of people around you.  I mention this because I have a special affinity for puns that my husband does not share.  He likes to say “You’re funny.  You’re just not as funny as you think you are.”  He always says it with a smile but I am excited to now claim that I am promoting good health when I can’t stop laughing at some cringe-worthy pun.

I encourage you to chair this issue to improve your own health by taking the time to smile and laugh.  But for now, let’s table the topic.

Check.
