There are so many reasons to be excited about NeoCon 2016, but here are 3 reasons to make sure you visit HON – either in our showroom or on social media – June 13-15:

Be HON
Our theme this year is “Be Authentic, Be Honest, Be HON.”, and we are bringing it to life throughout the recently renovated HON showroom. The space has been transformed to give our visitors a chance to feel part of our story and to “Be HON”.

Become a part of our showroom design when you snap a Polaroid photo with your friends and add it to our giant photo collage (stay tuned for our fun new props!). Plus, you won’t want to miss our surprise activity to promote HON’s broad selection of fabrics and finishes by giving you the chance to add your own pop of color to our space. We’ll be capturing all of these exciting activities on social media too, so be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and look for the hashtag #BeHON!

Here at HON, green is so much more than just our favorite color. It all started when we began making card files from pieces of scrap metal almost 70 years ago.

HON Sustainability

Today, we are just as committed to conserving raw materials and reducing waste in our design, manufacturing, and distribution processes. Here are 6 ways in which The HON Company minimizes its environmental footprint:

  1. Recycled Counterweights – Rather than using new plates of steel for counterweights, HON converts waste material known as mill scale from a local steel plant into counterweights. This manufacturing process promotes waste reduction by diverting the mill scale from the landfills. As someone who has spent time working this process, I can tell you it is no easy task!
  2. Paint Reclamation – Our powder coat finishes are applied in a chamber that continuously collects any excess paint. HON manufacturing locations recycle more than 27,000 gallons of wet paint each year.
  3. Comold – As an alternative to plywood, comold is used in many of the HON seating components. Comold is composed of 97% compressed wood fiber wastes and molded into the structural seating components. This process saves 2,800 trees and diverts nearly 4,000 tons of waste from landfills annually!
  4. Disassembly Instructions – HON provides its dealers with disassembly instructions and recycling guidelines to assist with proper disposal of office furniture components at the end of their useful life.
  5. Fabric Recycling – We collect our scrap fabric and turn it over to a company that shreds it for use in “shoddy.” Shoddy is the material found in the trunks and floors of automobiles. Annually, we recycle 200-300 bales of fabric scraps – keeping 100 tons of waste out of landfills
  6. Bulk Packing – As an ongoing effort, HON is always working to reduce the amount of material used to package products. It is a challenge to minimize packaging while maintaining the protection required by our high quality standards, but we have gotten creative by bulk packing multiple items in a single package.

HON wants to know! How does your office stay green?

Leveraging fabrics and finishes across product platforms not only makes specifying easier, but also adds to versatility. Just as you shouldn’t have to limit yourself on color options, don’t limit yourself to the same standard desk configuration – get creative! Below are 5 less common, yet practical applications for HON product in the workplace.

Voi® Credenzas as ancillary seating and media storage

Voi

Try placing Voi credenzas in a meeting area to serve as ancillary seating and additional storage space. The layered height allows people to casually join the conversation, while the cabinets hide any office and media supplies.

Purpose® as “huddle room” seating

Purpose

“Huddle Rooms” are smaller conference areas designed for teamwork and productivity. Purpose’s light scale design and intuitive adjustments provide comfort without overpowering these smaller rooms.

Flock® as café “booth” seating

Flock

Frequently used in welcoming and reception areas, it’s easy to forget how versatile Flock is. Integrate the modular armless chair into a café area to create booth-style seating as pictured above, or just a softer area to encourage conversation and  collaboration. It might be a good idea to upholster in a durable fabric like Momentum’s Silica (now standard HON Grade VIII).

Endorse task stool with Flock personal table

Endorse

Provide extra seating in a training room with the Endorse task stool and Flock personal table. This is a great area for presenters to sit before taking the front of the room, or an area for late-comers to sneak into without disrupting the entire training/meeting.

Flock ottomans as ancillary seating in a conference room

Flock

Anytime a conference room has more people than chairs, count on the meeting starting late because everyone is plucking a chair from the nearest area to drag in. Add Flock ottomans to the corner or along the wall to provide additional seating and interest to an otherwise “dead space”.

What are some other unique or nontraditional ways you use HON products?

The HON Company is one of 12 operating companies under HNI Corporation, a leading global office furniture manufacturer. As a leading manufacturer, HON depends on its engineers to design and produce world-class, high-quality furniture for our Sales and Marketing teams to sell!

…But what is engineering?! We went straight to the sources to find out. Read below to hear how some of our HON members describe engineering!

engineering

Jim, Manufacturing Engineer: “Being able to take something apart, understand it, and put it back together.”

Joe, Manufacturing Engineer: “Solving the world’s problems.”

Nick, Manufacturing Engineer: “Innovation.”

Trevor, Manufacturing Engineer: “Development of new products and processes and improvement of previous products and processes.”

Brett, Manufacturing Engineer: “Solving problems.”

Shawn, Manufacturing Engineer: “Pure awesomeness.”

Russ, Engineering Manager: “The application of science and materials to manufacture products that will meet the needs of a person.”

Katie, Industrial Engineer: “Looking at a problem from various perspectives and being able to determine the best solution.”

Paul, Manufacturing Engineer: “Teamwork – working together.”

Shane, Product Engineer: “Quickly finding solutions to problems without disrupting the flow of product.”

Oisin, Manufacturing Engineer: Improving the world around you. It doesn’t have to be math- or science-related; it just has to be a problem solved for the better!”

TJ, Quality Engineer: “Designing and building solutions to complex problems using technology.”

Jonathan, Quality Engineer: A systematic approach to problem solving using quantitative information to determine the solution.”

So there you have it! Engineering means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. The HON Company leverages all of these perspectives in our processes to meet customer expectations.

Are you an engineer? Do you work with engineers? What does “engineering” mean to you?
