Working at HON has taught me the importance of corporate responsibility and giving back to your community – not to mention just how easy it can be. For example, HON headquarters hosts member Jeans Days on Fridays to give employees the opportunity to donate to a cause in exchange for a more casual dress code. Throughout the year, members vote on the charities that mean the most to them so that everyone feels a close connection to the mission. In 2016 alone, member Jeans Days at HON headquarters raised over $12,000.  This amount was then matched by the HNI Charitable Foundation, a group dedicated to fulfilling the HNI vision to “Be a Responsible Corporate Citizen”, for a grand total of almost $25,000.

HNI, The HON Company and Allsteel have joined together for many years to support City of Hope – an independent research and medical institution recognized as a leader in the fight against cancer, diabetes and HIV/AIDS – raising a record $635,000 in 2016.

This simple act of donating to many amazing organizations as a company inspired a personal challenge that I took on this year to donate to a new charity every week throughout 2017. I have picked local charities that serve my immediate community, as well as national and international causes by which my life has been personally affected.

HON’s dedication to its community has shown me that small acts can make a huge impact, both in our local neighborhoods and around the world. And it’s not always just about financial donations. In addition to gifts of money, it can be just as meaningful to write handwritten letters or personally thank your coworkers, customers and community members. I recently sent a thank you basket of treats to my local doctor’s office to recognize what they do for our community and thank the receptionist who impressed me with her professionalism at my last visit. It was an inexpensive way to show appreciation for a strong, local business and to make others feel valued.

What can you do to help out your fellow coworker, your customer, or your local community? If you don’t have the money to give, try simple things like writing a personal thank you to the teammate who helped you on an important project. Thank the person that held the door open for you as you walked back in from your lunch break.  Wave the guy through in the intersection on your commute to work. Even the simple act of paying for someone’s coffee can cause a huge ripple effect that puts a smile on everyone’s face. With the help of HON and HNI, I have been exposed to and learned a lot about the wonderful causes that our members find important and can’t wait to find new opportunities to give back.

How does your office give back to its community? What causes are important to you?

At HON, our commitment to minimizing our footprint and reducing the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes is not just something we do, it’s at the root of who we are. Our company was founded on the principle that it’s our responsibility to be resourceful, an idea inherent in the design of our first office product – recipe card files from pieces of scrap metal. Since then, we have continued to design our workplace solutions to incorporate recycled content and remain just as dedicated to maximizing energy efficiency and finding creative ways to decrease the waste of excess materials. It’s what we call Inspired Practicality, and it’s a pillar of the HON Brand.

Here are just a few examples of how we put Earth Day into action every day of the year:

HON recycles 27,000 gallons of paint

HON manufacturing locations recycle more than 27,000 gallons of wet paint annually

HON recycles fabric scraps

HON keeps 100 tons of waste from landfills every year by recycling bales of fabric scraps.

Using comold helps HON save over 2800 trees per year

HON manufactures products using Comold – or compression molded seat and back components – made from 97% recovered wood fiber. By using secondary wood material, we are able to save over 2,800 trees per year and divert nearly 4 thousand tons of post-consumer wood waste from landfills.

HON was the first office furniture manufacturer to achieve SCS Indoor Advantage

Multiple HON products have earned SCS Indoor Advantage Certification for low emission. More than 87% of our product is certified through the SCS Indoor Advantage program. (FUN FACT: In 2006, The HON Company became the first office furniture manufacturer to achieve SCS Indoor Advantage)

Over 75% of HON products have achieved level certification

More than 75% of HON products have achieved level certification based on the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Sustainable Furniture Standard. This certification helps hold manufacturers accountable for living up to their environmental claims.

Happy Thanksgiving from The HON Company

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays because I love any excuse to spend time in my kitchen, try new recipes and make delicious food to share with others. It’s also a time of year when we’re focused on gratitude, finding new ways to show appreciation and give back to our communities.

While Thanksgiving is traditionally a holiday spent with friends and family, there’s no reason you can’t celebrate with your “office family”, or colleagues, as well. Here are a few ways you can bring a little Thanksgiving spirit into your workplace:

  • Thank your customers. Showing appreciation for your most valued partners helps to cultivate important relationships. Even something as simple as a “Thank You” card can make all the difference!
  • Schedule a lunch with your teammates or employees. It’s not always easy to find the time to say thanks during a busy day at work, so finding time to show your appreciation outside of normal working hours may be the best solution. It can also be a great team-building experience!
  • Plan an office potluck. Invite your team to bring in their favorite Thanksgiving dishes to share, or encourage team-building by hosting an internal taste-testing or food display contest. You can even put up Thanksgiving or fall-inspired decorations for some added fun!
  • Donate to a local charity. The holiday season is a time when many organizations are promoting big fundraising campaigns and raising funds in order to provide community meals. A great way to give back to your community during this time is to host a food drive and collect items for a local pantry. Another idea is to plan a casual dress day at work, encouraging members to contribute to an important cause in exchange for the opportunity to wear less formal attire. You can build excitement by giving employees the opportunity to vote for their favorite local charities!

With the Thanksgiving holiday just around the corner, what are some of the ways you celebrate Thanksgiving in your office?
