What are some of your workplace goals for 2017?

We’ve all been there. December is filled with the excitement of the holiday season and getting ready to usher in the new year. Then we get into the heart of winter, when day after day is filled with dreary gray skies and frigid temperatures – or in Iowa’s case, an ice storm – and the lack of sun makes it that much harder for your sunny disposition to shine through. But fear not! Here are some tried and true ways to perk you up this winter and battle those winter blues, tailored specifically to the office world.

Switch it up with some swatches

Have you ever heard the saying “You eat with your eyes first?” That may pertain to how chefs plate their food, but the same applies to your surroundings, whether that’s your living room at home or your desk at work. Which sounds more appealing to you: light grey walls, dark grey floors, no decorations, or some dark chocolate woodgrains, wall art with rich pops of color, and a steaming cup of hot cocoa? I personally would be much more motivated to work in an environment that is comforting and incorporates colors and design elements that encourage positive emotions and productivity. Whether it’s a matter of adding pops of color through fabric or changing it up with darker woodgrains, you can very easily make a space feel considerably more comfortable and inviting by taking inspiration from some of HON’s color palettes:

Our company was founded on the principle that it’s our responsibility to be resourceful, an idea inherent in the design of our first office product – recipe card files from pieces of scrap metal. Since then, we have continued to design our workplace solutions to incorporate recycled content and remain just as dedicated to maximizing energy efficiency and finding creative ways to decrease the waste of excess materials. Using comold helps HON save over 2800 trees per year

HON manufactures products using Comold – or compression molded seat and back components – made from 97% recovered wood fiber. By using secondary wood material, we are able to save over 2,800 trees per year and divert nearly 4 thousand tons of post-consumer wood waste from landfills.

HON was the first office furniture manufacturer to achieve SCS Indoor Advantage

Multiple HON products have earned SCS Indoor Advantage Certification for low emission. More than 87% of our product is certified through the SCS Indoor Advantage program. (FUN FACT: In 2006, The HON Company became the first office furniture manufacturer to achieve SCS Indoor Advantage)

What are some of the environment friendly initiatives in your office?

HON Training Tips

HON Customer Support’s training program is an arduous 7 week course filled with product training, process overviews, and job shadowing. We’ve got brochures, timelines, PowerPoints, and handouts, but you know what the most effective part of our training is? Jeopardy.

Why, you may ask? It’s fun, it’s competitive, and new hires or new members have to think on their feet. Jeopardy puts their knowledge to the test and it paves the way toward delighting our customers. Want to engage your members and increase your training’s effectiveness? Here are a few simple strategies:

  • Interaction – The easiest way to combat sleepy stares is to get them involved! Asking questions (and waiting for them to answer) encourages participation and application of material. If you don’t think anyone will answer, direct the question to an individual and take turns with different members. If you’re lecturing, give them exercises or simulations to break up the monotony.
  • Gamification – Everyone loves a little competition! Incorporating training into different types of games aids in content mastery and retention. Whether it’s one on one or team against team, gaming adds variety and refreshes the information they’ve learned. Adding rewards and challenges invigorates the learning experience. I challenge you to give it a try.
  • Multi-media – Am I banning PowerPoint? No! But, banning 100% PowerPoint? Yes! That’s the purpose of multi-media: use a combination of multiple content forms to conduct effective training. Training shouldn’t fit snuggly in a three ring binder; it should be a dynamic amalgamation of handouts, electronic media, games, demonstrations, and exercises. PowerPoint is an effective tool to disseminate information, but a slide with twenty-seven bullet points and three pictures is not. Make sure to use your tools wisely.
