Anyone remember the film Pay it Forward with Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, and Haley Joel Osment? Its premise revolved around a junior high school teacher who gave his class an assignment to think of an idea to improve the world for the better and to, most importantly, put it into action. This was the first time I remember hearing the phrase, and it has really stuck with me. Small acts of kindness, aside from the obvious benefit of brightening someone else’s day, can also be a significant mood booster for the giver and influences his or her overall state of happiness. When it comes to the workplace, the ripple effect of paying it forward can help create a more positive company culture and work environment, and the best part is – it can be really simple to spread! Here are 6 of my favorite ways to be kind and “pay it forward” in the office:

Pop-Open Cards

Hands down my new favorites, I recently stumbled upon these at a local stationery store during one of my weekend road trips. Each of these small notes are wrapped individually, so it’s easy to pay it forward by choosing the best-suited message for a coworker and leaving it on his desk for daily motivation. I started with the Smile and Thanks sets, but Compendium, Inc. makes a whole host of different themed sets, some of which include: Carpe Diem, Cheers, Believe, Be Happy, and Dream.

Inspirational “Just Because” Notes

Dove chocolate wrappers can serve as an inspirational "just because" note to a coworker

Dove® Chocolate Wrappers come in at a close second and are scattered all over my fridge. The chocolate inside is an obvious added bonus as well. Dropping off a few treats or that one perfect saying is an exceptionally easy way to brighten a fellow coworker’s day. Fortune cookie takeaways and simple Post-it® notes (paired with your favorite Sharpie®, of course) also work perfectly well.

Caffeine Run

surprise your coworkers with a coffee run

Such a simple way to start someone else’s day off right. Bonus points if you know his/her favorite. Break out that gold card & earn those stars!

Mail Time

Surprise packages can brighten someone's day

I never feel more accomplished than when I’m walking out of the post office on a Saturday morning, having just purchased a new sheet of stamps with a successful mailing to start off the day (personal victory if this has miraculously occurred before noon). The best surprise package that I’ve received included my go-to desk accessories that now serve as quick mood boosters/inspiration when needed.

Taking a Break

Take a break with coworkers to get to know them

Aside from the obvious perk of recharging your work batteries for a bit during the middle of the day – this is prime social hour. Whether it’s getting to know the new employee who started last week, scheduling group outings with the rest of the team, or getting together with your closest work friend, this is a great opportunity to spend quality time with other’s and make someone else’s day. Showcased here is our fabulous HON Commons area during peak hours.

Kudos Emails

Send a kudos email to make someone's day

This is something I’m constantly trying to do more often and have been finding it works best for me if I dedicate a few minutes on a Friday afternoon or over the weekend – an easy way to make sure others’ work is being noticed and that my teammates feel appreciated. Particularly in Field Sales, we rely heavily on the tools, resources, and help provided from other teams throughout the organization.

How are you paying it forward at work?

How to pack professionally in just a carry-on suitcase

With NeoCon right around the corner, packing is fresh on our minds here at HON. Did you know you can pack for a week long business trip in a standard carry-on suitcase? It’s easy! Here are some tips and tricks to remember for the next time you travel:

Why should I only pack a carry-on?

Traveling with carry-on luggage usually means that you’ll get in and out of the airport faster than if you are traveling with checked baggage, which is always a plus on a business trip. Even better, most airlines now let you check in for your flight on an app and skip the check in line altogether.  You won’t have to wait the extra time for the baggage handlers to unload the plane and load the bags onto the conveyer belt, or for your bag to make its way to you after riding the world’s slowest carousel.  By carrying on your bag, you guarantee that it will not get lost and that its important contents will arrive the same day and time as you do.

What do I pack?

Keep it simple.  A good rule of thumb is to pack enough outfits for the number of days you will be on the trip plus two to three casual outfits for evening activities.  Be sure to try on all of your outfits while you pack to make sure that you have everything you need.  (This may take extra time, but not as long as you will have to wait for your checked bag so it balances out!)  When it comes to toiletries, keep in mind that travel laws restrict you from packing any liquids over 3 ounces in a carry-on bag.  But, since most hotels offer complimentary toiletries, you can ask for free toothpaste, mouthwash, hairspray, deodorant, etc. when you check in to your room and avoid the stress of trying to safely pack these items with your clothes and business documents.

How should I pack?

Roll your clothes.  By doing this you are able to fit much more in your suitcase, as well as minimize the amount of wrinkles that each shirt or pants will have. Since many airlines don’t enforce a weight limit on carry-on luggage, you have the flexibility to pack a lot into a little space when it’s done efficiently!

Another perk to traveling efficiently with just a carry-on? When you get back from your next business trip, you will be able to dump your entire suitcase straight into the wash rather than hang half of it back up in your closet because you over-packed.  Just remember to take out your shoes!

What are some of your personal packing tricks?

Today’s workers are more mobile than ever before, and it’s easy to get distracted from your workplace wellness priorities when you’re constantly moving between different work environments. From investing in ergonomic furniture to choosing healthier food options, here are some great ways to keep on top of your health in the busy office!

Staying Active

You might really love Cross-Fit, while I’m a huge yoga fan. As long as you’re getting in at least 3 decent workouts a week, you’ll be doing your body some good and ensuring you have the energy needed to be productive in the office. Here’s what the American Heart Association recommends:

  • At least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least 5 times per week for a total of 150

OR

  • At least 25 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity at least 3 days per week for a total of 75 minutes; or a combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity

AND

  • Moderate- to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity at least 2 days per week for additional health benefits
  • For lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, an average of 40 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity 3 or 4 times per week

That’s all well and good, but what about when you’re not exercising or sleeping—the other 15.5 hours of your day? Don’t forget about proper posture and ergonomics, because those are just as important for keeping your body in tune (and pain-free) while you work as working out regularly can be.

  • When seated, ensure that you’re maintaining a healthy posture: Keep your feet on the ground, your back supported with back of your chair, and make sure your feet, legs and arms are well supported. Also make sure that your neck and shoulders remain relaxed and supported.  Posture is important for blood flow and overall comfort throughout the day.

Drink like a fish.

Are you drinking enough water? Want an easy way to make sure you are? Give Plant Nanny a try.

Use the Plant Nanny App to stay hydrated

Plant Nanny may sound (and look) like something that is meant for your 10 year old niece, but it’s a fun way to keep you adequately hydrated. You can personalize your account to determine how much water per day you truly need, and then the app sends you reminders throughout the day if you haven’t logged your intake. It’s incredibly helpful, especially when you’re busy.

Some other tips to help you get enough water throughout the day:

  • Start your day with some herbal tea or warm water with lemon to fire up your digestive system.
  • Throw a few spare water bottles in the car for when you’re stuck in traffic or just forget your regular bottle.
  • Keep a HON mug or water bottle visible at your desk so you remember to sip throughout the day.

Eating Right

Lacking your nutrition? There’s an app for that. My go-to is MyFitnessPal, because it’s great regardless of whether you’re trying to lose weight, maintain, or just make sure you’re getting the right nutrients.

Use MyFitnessPal to stay healthy in the office

If you don’t have time to track every single thing you’re eating, that’s okay, too.

  • Bring healthy snacks with you every day so that you aren’t tempted by the candy bar you’ve been hiding in the back of your desk drawer when mid-day hunger strikes.
  • Eat the cake that was ordered in for Mary Sue’s birthday (in moderation). Forbidding yourself from having any treats can lead to binges or overall poor eating habits. So have a slice of birthday cake (just ask for a smaller piece) and have some extra vegetables with dinner instead of that baked potato to balance it out.
  • Start with salad (or carrots, or spinach, or celery). Not only does this help make you feel fuller faster, but the fiber in veggies like these help coat your stomach to optimize your digestive enzymes and make it easier for your body to process your dinner.

You may have heard these recommendations before, or you may not have. Either way, I hope that they help you stay on track with your own health and wellness goals, whatever they may be.

They say “it takes a village to raise a child”.  Well, it also takes a community of customers, designers, engineers, marketing whizzes, and sales representatives to create a product brainchild.

For example, before HON created and launched its healthcare-focused brainchild, Soothe, we spent several months conducting research and interviews to understand which features are important in a healthcare line and the current furniture solutions that exist in today’s marketplace. The valuable feedback we gained from conversations with patients, caregivers, facilities manager, designers, sales representatives and more allowed us to define the unique needs of those in the healthcare field and identify what gaps needed to be filled.

After processing this information and with the help of our “village”, the healthcare-focused seating and table line, Soothe, was born…on a warm spring day in April, 2015.

In recognition of Soothe’s 1 year anniversary in the HON portfolio, let’s talk about 5 things we especially love about Soothe:

  1. The full Soothe line presents a wide selection of: patient seating, including a high-back patient chair and recliner; guest seating; benches; and tables.
    HON Soothe for Healthcare
  1. Soothe was designed to address the cleanability needs of healthcare environments through wipe-out areas in the back of the guest seating and a selection of graded-in healthcare appropriate fabrics.
  1. Soothe provides the level of durability needed for high-traffic areas in the healthcare arena by being supported by the HON Full Lifetime Warranty and a reinforced leg design on the guest seating to distribute force evenly and provide a sturdy foundation.
  1. Soothe’s patient recliner enhances comfort, safety, and control for the patient and the caregiver. Some of my favorite features include:
  • The pivoting arms which can be easily activated to move the arms fully up and out of the way during patient transfers or examinations
  • Infinite recline feature to allow the patient or caregiver to select from an infinite amount of configurations to create their own comfort
    HON Soothe for Healthcare
  1. Soothe is a strong complement to the rest of the HON portfolio of products, allowing HON to provide a full healthcare solution from the front waiting room to the back administrative offices, and many places in between.

What do you love about Soothe?
