Archives for the month of: March, 2013

So, you hate going to the office. Not because of the work, of course, but because you hate your workspace. Is your office boring? Are you tired of the décor? Looking to make a change, but have no idea where to start? You’re not alone. Taking the first step to changing your office space is always the hardest, but putting it off is only going to make you hate your  office more. Try to take your office redo one easy step at a time.

Pinterest Design

1. Get inspired

When I need a little design inspiration, I turn to everyone’s favorite online bulletin board: Pinterest. Pinterest has  hundreds of gorgeous office looks, DIY projects and wishlists to look at in order to build your dream office. I post on
here daily so I can always have inspiring spaces a few clicks away. I’d suggest creating a separate board just for your office redo in order to motivate and inspire you, as well as track all of your ideas.

2. Be realistic

If you have limited space or a limited budget, you have to be realistic on how to change your workspace. If you’re renting an office space, you’re obviously not going to be able to knock out walls for that loft feel you love. I don’t think you need to do construction in order to have an awesome workspace/office, so think outside of “permanent” changes. If you have a small space for just a desk at home, you won’t be redoing an entire room. You can still have a great space no
matter how big, so keep that in mind.

3. Take it one piece at a time

Whatever it is that bothers you so much about your office, be it your walls, your carpet, or your furniture, try redoing a piece at a time. Start by changing the walls with a new paint job or temporary wallpaper or decorative panels. Get a
new desk or a new chair and see how you feel. Making these changes one at a time, instead of all at once, will be less overwhelming and more enjoyable. Most importantly, keep a list of all the changes you want to make otherwise you won’t know what to do or where to go!

4. Rearrange things (Even the President does it!)
If you can’t find anything wrong with the decor itself, maybe it’s the position of everything that’s bothering you. Recently, I moved my workspace from my office’s main room and into an enclosed office and I feel SO much better. Try
moving your desk to the opposite wall or shifting things around in your cubicle, even the most subtle of changes can help you love your space a little more.

What are some quick solutions to solving the lack of love of your workspace?

Last week, HON Sales Training held three one-day Accelerate™ and New Product Training Sessions in Westlake, Texas at the Dallas/Fort Worth Marriott-Solana. I thought it would be a great opportunity to snap a few photos to show the day-to-day of a HON Sales Trainer.

Leaving the Quad City Airport for sunny Dallas, TX- a little part of me felt like I was going on Spring Break again. The feeling vanished quickly when it was only 47 degrees at DFW when we landed.

How to Resist Your Co-Workers

I’m not talking about the lure of the small town interoffice relationships, I’m talking about how summer’s coming, I’m getting married, and I’m trying to be healthy. (Yes, summer is coming.)  What can I do to get back in shape for all of that?  For the majority of my college career to fund my education I was a Personal Training Coordinator who oversaw the personal training at our local gym and helped many individuals get back into shape or better their shape and overall happiness.  For one reason or another travel, late nights, missed lunches or lunches out all add up.  One day I went to bed a strapping young man, then the next I woke up having to find another belt to strap it all in.  I am putting the knowledge I have learned from my previous life and having lost over 50 pounds to return my own body to its former glory…  Here are the tricks that I am using along the way that might just help you too!  I call it the RESIST approach…

The HON Company Commons Muscatine

HON 1st Floor Commons Area: Perfect for a casual meeting or to grab a quick drink!

Does a better part of your day include working with others?  Do you spend a lot of time collaborating or strategizing as a team?  Many individuals in today’s workforce can probably answer yes to these questions.  As part of our Member and Community Relations team, I spend a significant portion of my day working with our prospective and current members on questions ranging from payroll and benefits to hiring needs and strategic improvements.  Much of my work involves conversations with others, discussions and Q&A, and a need to work through challenges to come to an optimal resolution.  One thing that helps me to be successful and meet these needs on a regular basis is the HON facility itself.  It is very fostering to the collaborative needs of my job and truly allows me, as a member, to accomplish my daily goals with ease.

Two of my favorite spots in the HON HQ building to pull together for a quick meeting are our commons area and the tunnel.  Both spaces offer tables and seating on a first come, first served basis and provide room for many.  In times where office footprints are becoming smaller and conference rooms space can be at a premium, having an alternative to working at your desk is a refreshing change of pace.

HON Headquarters Tunnel

This tunnel connects the 3rd Floor of the HON Headquarters to our Oak Laminate Plant.

And for those of us who sometimes just need to step away to get something done, these spaces satisfy this need to.  Just pop in your headphones and crank up your favorite playlist (which for all of you HON blog followers will know it could be Little Mermaid), and you’ll have your own serenity space just feet away from your desk.

HON Headquarters

HON Members use collaborative areas like this for impromptu meetings or a quick touchdown!

So next time you need to work in a group or have something you just need to check off your list, consider what alternative options you have in your own office location to working in a conference room or at your own desk and get up and go!

HON Integrated Design Solutions

Did you know that HON has a team of six full-time designers?  Each of us have a degree in Interior Design and are dedicated to producing outstanding projects for HON dealers with a quick turnaround time to boot.  You can find us on the third floor of headquarters, working diligently each and every day.

During a typical day, we work in AutoCAD and silently fall into what we call a “CAD Trance”.  This is because we are focused on the enormous list of projects we work to complete each day.  Our biggest month last year was a whopping 747 projects completed and we’ve already beat that record this February by completing 779 projects.  Whew, that’s a lot of projects!

You can submit projects to the IDS team through the HON Ready Portal! How do I do this you ask?  Well, we have instructions right there on the left-hand side of our home page.  The project is then reviewed and scheduled with a turnaround time of 2-3 business days.  From this point, we work our designer magic and produce a fully guaranteed project complete with 2D and 3D line drawings and a complete bill of materials.  Oh yeah, and the majority of our design services are completely FREE!

Next time you need help designing the perfect space, contact us! We’d be more than happy to help you transform your office and make your vision a reality.

I recently caved and finally purchased an iPad. This weekend I spent countless hours holed up in a coffee shop hunched over my iPad, surfing the web and browsing the iTunes App Store for those apps that would bring a little more productivity to my daily life. I’ve listed 10 apps below (in no particular order), which have intrigued me the most.

1. Dragon Dictation (Free)

Dragon Dictation

Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application that allows you to speak and instantly see your text or email messages. You can also dictate status updates directly to your favorite social media sites or send notes and reminders to yourself. I could see how this would come in handy while in the safety of my own home, but I can’t imagine using this in public. Learn more here.
